These video clips are from our "dimmer switch" delayed arch onset practice session. The goal is to focus on
not getting to 100% arch too quickly (like an On/Off light switch), but rather to bring in the arch more
gradually (like turning up a dimmer switch), allowing rise time and getting to 100% arch only at the very top
of the jump. We did this by saying "10 - half - Arch" or "10 - and - half - Arch" during the rise, and working
on only being at full 100% arch when we eventually say "Arch" - not right after leaving the ground...
Video #1 - Look at each frame of video after your plant foot leaves the ground. 1st frame: I see the front of your face between your arms and a vertical release - great so far!; 2nd frame: head now back to maybe 70% arch force?; 3rd frame: 100% arch here while your hips are still rising. Frames 3-4-5 are all holding 100% arch before the break. We'd like to see a more gradual arch onset than this (since that is the focus of this drill :-) Video #2 - Frames 1-4 after takeoff look pretty much the same here as on the last jump. 5th frame has a hint of early break in it - and yes, the break is premature causing a strike on the way down. It has the release of a BIG jump at the bar, but then the too-quick timing in both the rise & break make it just an average jump for you. Video #3 - OK better - I see your face on 2 frames of this video, meaning you're slower to initiate the arch at takeoff. Full arch still occurs in the 4th frame and hard break in the 5th... Video #4 - At full-speed this one just looks more patient & delayed - doesn't it? You're getting the delay of the initial arch onset, but this overall timing is really an area we can focus on this year to improve your jumping! Video #5 - Icky pre-turn going into 10; but a good release and a teense of the delayed timing we're working on. It is the kick/break timing which has you closest to the bar... If the parabola were not "violated" by the break drop, this jump would be 4+ the whole way through... Video #6 - This is a 5-0 or 5-2 attempt, with the proper % & pacing. NICE Finish arms & release (this has become a HABIT - yeah!) get you up strongly. 1st frame after takeoff is about 20% arch; 2nd frame is about 50% arch; 3rd frame is about 75% arch; 4th frame is finally 100% - so good "dimmer switch" here!!! LOOK at your back height above the crossbar on that 5th frame (where the upright is right in front of your head) - you're literally 6+ or maybe even 8" above the crossbar!!! Then what happens in the next frame of the video? BBBRRREEEAAAKKK!!! We gotta WORK on delaying that :-) |
